The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game where players make wagers on their cards in the hope of winning. In order to win, a player must make an ante (the amount of the ante varies between games). Once the players have all placed their bets, the cards are turned over and the highest hand wins. The betting process in poker is done clockwise, and a player can raise his or her initial bet or fold.

The best natural hand in poker is a straight flush. A straight flush is made up of five cards in the same suit. The ace may be high or low, but cannot wrap around the other cards. An ace high straight flush is known as a Royal Flush. When this happens, the player is awarded the pot.

If you lose a hand, the next time you play, be sure to call. You never want to bet with less than your hand, but you do not want to bet too high. When you have a better hand, you can raise your bet to double or even triple your original bet. Then, you can bet your full pot and win the pot.

The player who deals the cards will be called the “dealer”. In casual play, the right to deal the cards rotates among players. Typically, a white plastic disk is marked as the dealer button. The dealer button determines the order of betting.
