The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a game where players use their cards to make the best possible hand. The player with the highest poker hand wins the pot.

Players are typically required to make a blind bet. This is a pre-emptive bet, meaning that the player must put in an amount of money equal to the total contribution that the player before him has made.

The player may also bluff, by betting that he or she has the best hand. Sometimes a player will raise, by making a bet more than the previous bettor. If the opponent calls, the player with the best hand takes the pot.

Cards are dealt clockwise around the poker table. After the deal, a turn to bet is passed to the next player.

Players are allowed to re-distribute their chips if they want to change their hand. There is a limit to the number of chips that can be in the pot at any one time.

Poker is played with a deck of cards, which are shuffled by the house dealer. Each card has a value, usually in white or red. A joker counts as any suit for a flush or straight. Several other types of cards are used, including wild cards. Wild cards do not affect the value of the hand.

Poker chips are commonly made of ceramic or plastic. Players can exchange these for cash. They may also buy chips with real money. Some casinos offer a “kitty,” a special fund that all players share equally. These funds are used to pay for the cost of new cards.
