What is a Slot?

Slot

You’ve checked in, made it through security, found your gate, queued to get on board, struggled with the overhead lockers and settled into your seat. Then you hear the captain say, “We’re waiting for a slot.” What is a slot and why can’t we take off?

The Slot

A slot is a position in a group, series, or sequence. A slot can also refer to a specific time or date. For example, you may be able to book a time slot at a salon in advance.

Another meaning of the word slot is the area of the ice that gives players the best chance to score without a deflection. This is the area right in front of the goaltender between the face-off circles in the offensive zone. The area below the face-off circles is known as the low slot while the area above them is the high slot.

In a casino game, a slot is a reel with symbols that spin when a button is pressed. When a winning combination appears, the player wins money. Online slot games use a random number generator (RNG) to determine where the symbols land on the reels. Some slots are programmed to weight certain symbols more heavily than others.

A slot is a way to pass data from the parent scope into the child scope. This is useful if the parent scope doesn’t have a method to call the child scope directly, but you want to render content in its header. In this case, the template would have to be written like template v-slot:header>.
